About
Honduran-born and Garifuna oboist Joël Angel Roches—also known as Atma Daleep—is a transfeminine artist whose presence is as dynamic as her music. With a nurturing spirit that extends beyond her artistry, Atma channels her passion for the oboe while standing as a fierce advocate for the trans community and mental health awareness. She is a steadfast defender of her students and colleagues, using her voice to create spaces where all are valued and supported.
A dedicated educator, Atma believes that music is for everyone, regardless of social status, history, or talent. From beginners just picking up the oboe to advanced musicians mastering the craft, she is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where anyone with the will to learn can thrive. Her mantra, "Music is for all," speaks to her deep conviction that the doors to musical expression should be open to all who seek them.
Atma currently serves on the faculty of the Global Music School for the Arts and Collaboration under her birth name, Joël Angel Roches, and also contributes to Empowering Communities through Art (ECTA), where she helps shape the next generation of artists. Her performance resume is as varied as her passions, with collaborations including the Albany Symphony, New England Repertory Orchestra, Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, and the NYSound Circuit in New York City. She has also played with the Queer Urban Orchestra of New York, Brooklyn Symphony, the SugarHill Salon Chamber Music Series, and the Doctors Orchestra of New York.
Atma holds a degree from The Manhattan School of Music, and a Graduate Teaching Artist degree from The University of Massachusetts Amherst.
