About
A Musical Journey
Known for his eclectic personality, Honduran-born and proud Garifuna/Garingaru oboist Joël Angel Roches (AKA Joël Angel Rocha) is a pioneering artist geared to representing the full range of the oboe, from the standard medieval/baroque style to modern/contemporary, improvisation and jazz. A representative of the Gay (LGBTQIA+) and Non-Binary community, Joël does not hesitate to defend their students and colleagues.
As an educator, Joël Angel Rocha teaches from the most beginner to the most advanced, and believes in the motto “Music is for all no matter the social status, history, or talent.”They believe all interested in learning should be allowed to know.
Currently, Joël is on faculty with the Global Music School for the Arts and Collaboration, and the Empowering Communities through Art organization (ECTA). They have performed with the Albany Symphony, New England Repertory Orchestra, Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, NYSound Circuit (a contemporary ensemble in New York City), Queer Urban Orchestra of New York, Brooklyn Symphony, SugarHill Salon Chamber Music Series, and the Doctors Orchestra of New York. During their free time, Joël Rocha is an avid yoga enthusiast, a hyperactive reed-maker, and an all-around jovial being.
Joel Roches holds a Bachelor's Degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where they were under the tutelage of Liang Wang and James Austin Smith. Before college, they were under the tutelage of Aaron Lakota.
Joël Roches is currently accepting students and is also accepting students interested in reed-making. Unlike most wind players, Joël’s musical journey originated with the Cello and Vocal repertoire, which has categorized them as a “Poetic, Lyrical, and a Welcoming sound” (Chicopee Register).

"There comes a time when we as people have to come together to nurture the arts in all their forms. Personally, music should be available to all no matter the race, social class, history, or talent. When we as a nation come together for this fight the populous can grow, remembering when you are at your worst the arts, be it what you want, is a way to heal the body, mind, and spirit." - J.A.R.
